Hey gamers, as you’re all well aware, Playstation’s newest console just dropped. The Playstation 5 Pro (PS5P) is an upgrade to the Playstation 5 in every way, and there’s no better way to see that than with the launch title released with it, Astro Bot. Now good launch titles are essential to the success of a console, every generation’s best consoles had legendary launch titles to put their best foot forward. The Nintendo 64 had Mario 64, the Gamecube had Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Switch had Armsā¢, the Xbox had Halo, the Xbox 360 had Halo 3*, the PS2 had Half-Life, the PS3 had Demon’s Souls, the PS4 had Bloodborne, the PS5 had Demon’s Souls, and now the PS5P brings us Astro Bot.
So with that all said, what makes Astro Bot the perfect launch title? Well, despite being a cute platformer, it pushes the PS5P hardware to show off what this beast of a console is capable of, giving gamers plenty of eye candy to enjoy. Not only that, but the game is chock full of references to everyone’s favorite Sony properties like Resident Evil, Persona 5, and even Ape Escape! Normally, just stuffing references into a game isn’t that impressive, but here it’s actually a genius move by Sony’s marketing department, because presumably most or even all the games referenced here will be getting new sequels during the PS5P’s lifetime. Older gamers like me will remember playing on demo discs back in the day, which gave you previews of upcoming games to get you hyped for them. In a way, Astro Bot is like a demo disc for a new generation, delivering a great game while also hyping us up for everything to come.
In summary, is Astro Bot good? Yes. Does it excite me for the future of the PS5P? Double yes. If this is what they can do with the launch of their brand new console, I can hardly imagine what incredible exclusives we’ll have for the PS5P in just a few years.
*Editor’s Note: Upon further research, Halo 3 was not a launch title for the Xbox 360, but all the staff here at Brain Slop agree that Halo 3 is epic and deserves the shout out anyways.
